
International Grant Audit Consultant
A leading international NGO is seeking an experienced German speaking grant audit professional to undertake short term grant expenditure audit assignments across Europe, supporting the assurance and effective use of institutional donor funding.
Assignments involve completing grant expenditure audits for a diverse range of internationally funded projects, from emergency response and humanitarian aid to longer term development programmes in areas such as agriculture, health, infrastructure, education and technical research.
Projects are typically 1 to 3 weeks in length and may be based across mainland Europe. Assignments are offered on a project by project basis, with contractors able to be based in either the UK or Europe.
The consultant will be responsible for carrying out grant expenditure audits and assurance assignments for NGOs, grant recipients and implementing partners funded by international donor institutions. This may include reviewing expenditure against donor rules, assessing supporting documentation, testing compliance with grant agreements, identifying issues or risks, and preparing clear audit reports and findings for clients and funders.
The work requires strong technical audit skills, sound judgement, cultural sensitivity and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of organisations, teams and beneficiaries in different international contexts.
Key responsibilities
- Carrying out grant expenditure audits and assurance assignments for donor funded projects
- Reviewing expenditure against donor rules, grant agreements and contractual requirements
- Assessing supporting documentation and testing the eligibility of costs
- Identifying compliance issues, financial risks, control weaknesses and areas requiring clarification
- Preparing clear audit reports, findings and recommendations for clients and funders
- Working effectively with NGOs, grant recipients, implementing partners and project teams
- Managing assignment workplans and deadlines, often across short project timescales
- Working remotely with clients and travelling internationally where assignments require it and are deemed safe
Requirements
- Qualified audit professional, ideally ACA, ACCA or equivalent
- At least five years’ post qualification experience
- Strong background in audit, grant assurance, expenditure verification or donor funded programme review
- Experience working on grant audit, grant management, expenditure verification or donor compliance assignments
- Strong technical audit and analytical skills
- Excellent report writing and presentation skills in English
- Fluency or professional working proficiency in German
- Experience working with NGOs, not for profits or international development organisations
- Good understanding of donor funding structures and grant compliance requirements
- Strong planning, organisational and time management skills
- Diplomacy, professionalism and cultural sensitivity
- Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing environments
- Effective experience of working remotely with clients and project teams
- Genuine interest in international development, humanitarian work and social impact
Desirable
- Experience working on UN, EC, World Bank or other institutional donor grant assurance assignments
- Experience undertaking short term international audit or assurance assignments
