Finance Mentor

A growing US nonprofit seeks an experienced finance mentor to support its Founder with budgeting, cash flow, financial reporting and long-term sustainability.

Our partner is a small, but growing US nonprofit working to strengthen community wellbeing and economic opportunity through a mix of practical programmes, education and community-based initiatives. The organisation is developing both charitable and earned-income activities and is now strengthening the financial foundations needed to support its next stage of growth.

The Founder & Executive Director is seeking an experienced finance mentor who can act as a trusted sounding board as she builds confidence in financial management, embeds new budgeting and reporting tools, and navigates the financial relationship between the nonprofit and for-profit entities.

The mentoring will focus on:

  • Reviewing the organisation’s financial records and helping the Founder understand what the accounts are showing, including reconciliations, categorisation and any areas requiring closer attention
  • Building on the consolidated budget and funding-source tracking tools already developed, helping establish a practical rhythm for reviewing financial information and using it to support decision-making
  • Supporting 2027 budgeting and month-by-month cash-flow planning, particularly given the organisation’s seasonal earned-income cycle and year-round costs
  • Reviewing the financial relationship between the nonprofit and LLC, including appropriate separation of activities, allocation of shared costs, invoicing and earned-income arrangements
  • Helping the Founder understand which financial and management reports are most useful for her and the Board, how frequently they should be reviewed, and what questions they should inform
  • Acting as a sounding board around financial sustainability, reserves, future funding, organisational growth and the evolving role of earned income
  • Reviewing financial policies and processes as the organisation’s accounting and reporting approach develops

This mentorship would particularly suit a senior finance professional with US nonprofit experience, ideally including familiarity with 501(c)(3) organisations operating alongside an LLC, social enterprise or other hybrid structure. Experience supporting small or founder-led organisations with budgeting, cash-flow forecasting, management reporting, board reporting, financial sustainability and earned-income models would be especially valuable.

The role is advisory rather than implementation-based. The mentor would not be expected to undertake bookkeeping, prepare accounts or provide legal or tax advice, but would support the Founder to review, understand and strengthen the work being carried forward internally.

The mentorship will be delivered remotely over six months, with approximately 2–4 hours of support per month, and is expected to begin in November 2026.
