Finance Mentor
Our partner works across community engagement, education and creative initiatives, using its programmes to support learning, participation and positive social change.
The organisation is transitioning towards a two-entity structure, with a nonprofit responsible for its charitable programmes and a separate commercial entity developing earned-income activities. This presents an interesting opportunity to help its leadership team strengthen financial planning, management and oversight as the new arrangements become operational.
The organisation is seeking an experienced mentor who can act as a trusted sounding board, offering practical guidance on the financial relationship between the entities, longer-term sustainability, budgeting and financial reporting.
The mentoring will likely focus on:
- Financial arrangements across two entities: Reviewing the financial model and helping the leadership team think through practical approaches to staff time recharges, shared costs, overhead recovery, intercompany invoicing and income-sharing arrangements.
- Budgeting and forecasting: Supporting the development and review of 2027 budgets and cash-flow forecasts for both entities, including programme costs, funding gaps and the income needed to sustain operations.
- Financial sustainability and reserves: Exploring how commercial income can contribute towards nonprofit sustainability, particularly where restricted funding does not fully cover core organisational costs.
- Financial controls and processes: Reviewing proposed financial controls, accounting and reporting arrangements to ensure they remain practical, transparent and proportionate.
- Board reporting and oversight: Helping develop a clear, accessible approach to financial reporting that enables a board without extensive financial experience to understand performance, risks and strategic decisions.
- Strategic sounding-board support: Offering perspective as the leadership team navigates organisational change, competing priorities and the financial implications of developing its nonprofit and commercial activities.
This opportunity would suit:
- A senior finance professional with experience supporting social enterprises, charities with trading activities, hybrid organisational structures or multi-entity businesses.
- Experience in financial planning, budgeting, cash-flow forecasting, cost allocation, overhead recovery, intercompany arrangements and financial sustainability would be particularly valuable.
- Familiarity with Irish nonprofit or company financial structures would be an advantage, although we would also welcome candidates with relevant experience from other jurisdictions who can bring a strong financial management and strategic perspective.
The organisation would particularly value someone who can combine technical financial understanding with a practical, supportive approach, helping the leadership team develop confidence and strengthen its own financial decision-making.
The role is advisory rather than implementation-based. The mentor would not be expected to prepare financial accounts, implement accounting systems, draft legal agreements or provide specialist tax or legal advice. Instead, they would review and challenge work developed by the organisation, share relevant experience and help the team establish sound financial management practices that it can sustain independently.
