Mentor

A small, growing non-profit is seeking remote finance mentoring to strengthen reporting, budgeting and donor accountability, building on recent improvements to its Excel-based finance tracking.

Our partner is a small non-profit organisation working in Cameroon to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in conflict-affected and rural communities. Their work focuses on community engagement, health education, training for health providers, research and policy advocacy.

Following an initial finance consultation, the organisation has made good progress in improving its Excel-based financial tracking system and is now looking for light-touch mentoring support to build on this work. The overall aim is to help the team move from improved transaction tracking toward stronger reporting, budgeting and donor accountability, while making sure the systems remain practical for their current size and context.

The mentoring will focus on:

  • Continuing to strengthen the Excel-based financial tracking system introduced through the initial consultation, so that it supports clearer monitoring of income, expenses and bank balances
  • Developing better consolidated financial reports and basic financial statements, including cashflow reports, balance sheet-style summaries and period-end reports
  • Supporting budgeting processes, including how to prepare organisational and project budgets, revise budgets during the year, and link restricted funding to specific projects
  • Improving donor reporting, particularly how to track restricted funds and report accurately and confidently to funder
  • Acting as a sounding board around whether and when the organisation may need to move beyond Excel into a more formal accounting system suited to a growing non-profit

This mentorship would suit a finance professional with experience supporting small or growing non-profits, particularly around financial reporting, budgeting, donor reporting and restricted fund tracking. Experience with Excel-based finance systems, simple reporting templates and coaching finance staff would be especially valuable.

The mentorship will be delivered remotely over 6 months, starting from September 2026 to offer support of their year-end and annual budgeting periods with approximately 2–4 hours of support per month.
