Annual Mentor
We are seeking an experienced charity finance and governance leader to mentor a Chartered Accountant who is relatively new to the Finance Trustee role at a small, volunteer-led UK health charity.
The mentee has strong technical finance experience but is still developing her confidence around the wider strategic and governance responsibilities that come with being a Trustee. She is particularly interested in how good governance, financial oversight and strategic planning can be applied effectively in practice, without creating unnecessary complexity for a small organisation.
The mentorship would provide an independent and confidential sounding board as she develops in her current role and considers her longer-term path as a Finance Trustee or Treasurer. Although her present charity will provide useful practical context, the support should be focused more broadly on her own development and would remain relevant if she later moved to another charity role.
The mentoring could focus on:
- Developing confidence in strategic financial leadership at Board level
- Strengthening understanding of Trustee responsibilities, governance and effective financial oversight
- Thinking through Board reporting, relationships and how to communicate financial issues clearly to fellow Trustees
- Exploring financial sustainability, reserves, fundraising and the foundations needed for longer-term growth
- Navigating differing views around strategy, priorities and organisational direction
- Acting as an experienced sounding board as the mentee considers her current role and future Finance Trustee or Treasurer opportunities
This mentorship would suit someone with substantial charity finance, governance and Board experience. A former charity CFO, Finance Director, Treasurer or Finance Trustee would be particularly relevant, especially someone who has supported small or growing charities through periods of development, change or strategic uncertainty.
The ideal mentor will be approachable, thoughtful and supportive, while also able to offer honest challenge and practical insight. Experience of helping Boards balance strong governance with proportionate and workable processes would be especially valuable.
The mentorship will be delivered remotely over 12 months, offering up to 25 hours of support in total, typically through monthly video calls with flexibility depending on need.
