Annual Mentor

A charity Treasurer is seeking an experienced UK charity finance mentor to strengthen his understanding of charity governance, strategic financial leadership and Board-level responsibilities.

We are seeking an experienced senior charity finance professional to mentor a qualified accountant currently serving as Treasurer of an international charity supporting people seeking asylum through specialist research and a global network of volunteers.

The mentee has a strong background in finance, accounting and data analytics, having originally developed his career overseas before moving into the UK charity sector. He is now keen to build on his existing experience by developing a deeper understanding of UK charity finance, governance and the wider strategic responsibilities associated with being a Treasurer.

The mentorship would provide an independent and confidential sounding board as he develops his confidence in financial leadership, strategic decision-making and working effectively with charity Boards and senior stakeholders. Although his current Treasurer role will provide useful practical context, the support should focus on his broader professional development and understanding of the UK charity sector.

The mentoring could focus on:

  • Developing a stronger understanding of UK charity finance, regulatory requirements and statutory reporting
  • Strengthening knowledge of restricted and unrestricted funds, grant compliance and donor expectations
  • Building confidence in strategic financial leadership, budgeting, forecasting and financial decision-making
  • Exploring financial sustainability, reserves and longer-term financial planning
  • Developing effective Board reporting, governance and relationships with fellow Trustees and senior stakeholders
  • Acting as an experienced sounding board as the mentee develops his leadership skills and confidence as a charity Treasurer

This mentorship would suit someone with substantial senior UK charity finance and governance experience. A current or former charity CFO, Finance Director or experienced Treasurer would be particularly relevant, ideally with a strong understanding of charity regulation, financial oversight and Board-level responsibilities.

The ideal mentor will be approachable, supportive and willing to share practical experience, while providing constructive challenge and an independent perspective. Experience of supporting finance professionals moving into senior charity leadership or governance roles would be especially valuable.

The mentorship will be delivered remotely over 12 months, offering up to 25 hours of support in total, typically through monthly video calls with flexibility depending on need.
