Overseas Volunteer
Our partner is a locally based conservation organisation working to protect critically endangered tree kangaroos and the biodiversity of Papua New Guinea’s Torricelli Mountain Range, while supporting the livelihoods and wellbeing of surrounding communities.
Established in 2001, the organisation works with more than 40 remote villages and approximately 13,000 people. Its community-led programmes bring together conservation, health, education and sustainable development in one of the most biologically rich and least accessible regions in the world.
As the organisation has grown, its financial management has become increasingly complex. Day-to-day finance work currently relies heavily on support from its Australian-based founders. While this has enabled the organisation to operate effectively, it is not considered a sustainable long-term model.
The organisation is now seeking practical support to strengthen its internal systems, improve the organisation of financial information and build the confidence and capability of its in-country staff. A key priority is to support the gradual transfer of day-to-day financial responsibilities to the local finance lead, reducing reliance on the founders over time.
They are seeking a volunteer accountant or finance professional to work closely alongside the in-country finance lead and wider team. The placement will focus on strengthening the systems already in place, improving consistency and helping staff build confidence through practical, on-the-job support.
Key areas of support are likely to include:
- Reviewing and organising financial documentation
- Improving digital filing and use of shared systems
- Strengthening basic financial processes and internal controls
- Improving cash handling and financial record keeping
- Supporting more effective use of existing accounting software and spreadsheets
- Carrying out a light review of current processes and identifying practical improvements
- Providing hands-on training and mentoring to local staff
- Breaking processes down into clear and manageable steps
- Building staff confidence through repetition and practical support
- Supporting a gradual transition towards more locally led financial management
This is a highly practical and hands-on placement focused on ensuring that straightforward financial systems and processes are clearly understood and used consistently in day-to-day operations. The role is not about introducing complex new systems, but about working alongside staff to strengthen what is already in place, improve organisation and build confidence over time.
The placement will be based near Lumi in Papua New Guinea’s remote Torricelli Mountain Range. It would suit an experienced, patient and adaptable volunteer who is comfortable working in a mentoring capacity and living in a remote, off-grid environment with limited infrastructure and access to amenities.
