Finance Mentor
Our partner is a small, founder-led nonprofit in Southern Africa working to make education, technology and opportunities for independent living more accessible to people living with impairments and disabilities. The organisation is at an important stage of development, having secured its first significant grant and now looking to strengthen its financial planning, oversight and longer-term sustainability.
he organisation has introduced improved financial tracking tools and received recommendations for strengthening its financial management. Its founder would now value an experienced finance mentor who can build on this work, acting as a trusted sounding board and helping her develop greater confidence in financial planning and decision-making.
The mentoring will focus on:
- Supporting the development of practical budgeting, budget monitoring and cashflow forecasting tools.
- Helping the founder develop an organisational budget to support future activities, growth and resource planning.
- Offering guidance on developing budgets for grant proposals, ensuring financial information aligns with programme plans and funding requirements.
- Exploring opportunities to generate income through charging for certain services, including how these might be costed and priced sustainably.
- Advising on internal and board financial reporting to strengthen oversight and informed decision-making.
- Supporting the founder and her small team to apply financial policies, procedures and tools more confidently.
This opportunity would suit a senior finance professional with experience in nonprofit financial management, budgeting, forecasting, grant management and financial sustainability. Experience supporting small or growing nonprofits, alongside a coaching-oriented approach, would be particularly valuable.
Accessibility is an important consideration. The founder uses screen-reading technology and benefits from clear verbal explanations and accessible financial materials. The ideal mentor will be patient, adaptable and comfortable explaining financial concepts without relying solely on visual spreadsheets or presentations.
The role is advisory rather than implementation-based. The mentor would not be expected to undertake financial management tasks on behalf of the organisation, but would help the founder review, understand and apply financial information, develop practical tools and strengthen her confidence in making financial decisions.
The mentorship will be delivered remotely over six months, with approximately 2–4 hours of support per month, primarily through regular calls and occasional follow-up guidance.
This is a rewarding opportunity to share your financial expertise with a passionate social impact leader, helping strengthen the foundations of an organisation working to create more inclusive opportunities for its communities.
