Finance Mentor

A growing non-profit in Tanzania is seeking an experienced finance mentor to strengthen budgeting, forecasting, restricted fund management and strategic financial planning during a major period of growth.

Our partner works in Tanzania to improve maternal and newborn health through direct care, clinician training and wider health systems strengthening. The organisation also operates alongside a women-led social enterprise clinic model, with the longer-term aim of strengthening sustainability and reducing reliance on grant funding.

The organisation has recently secured significant new funding and is entering a major growth phase, with changing operational plans, a developing management team, and increasing donor expectations. The team would value an experienced finance mentor, with an understanding of managing a complex and growing donor grants portfolio, who can act as a sounding board, review work prepared internally, and help them make practical decisions around budgeting, forecasting and financial controls.

The mentoring will focus on:

  • Organisation-wide budgeting and forecasting: Strengthening the approach to developing and maintaining an integrated organisational budget that can respond to changing operational plans, funding and staffing needs.
  • Strategic resource allocation: Thinking through how unrestricted funding can be deployed effectively across programmes, core operations, growth opportunities and organisational priorities.
  • Managing restricted and unrestricted funding together: Understanding the full costs of activities, identifying where unrestricted resources are subsidising restricted programmes, and assessing the implications for financial sustainability.
  • Scenario planning and financial decision-making: Reviewing financial assumptions, modelling alternative growth and spending scenarios, and understanding the implications of different strategic choices.
  • Cash-flow management and sustainability: Strengthening the organisation’s understanding of its overall financial position, future commitments, available resources and capacity to sustain planned activities.
  • Financial leadership during growth: Acting as a trusted sounding board as the finance and management teams navigate changing plans, competing priorities, organisational capacity and financial risk.
  • Management and board-level financial information: Helping ensure financial reports and planning tools provide a useful picture of the organisation’s overall financial health

This opportunity would particularly suit:

  • A senior finance professional with experience as a CFO, Finance Director or strategic finance leader within a small or growing nonprofit, social enterprise, mission-led organisation or business.
  • Experience managing flexible or unrestricted funding, integrated organisational budgets, cash-flow forecasts, full-cost recovery, resource allocation, growth planning and financial sustainability would be especially valuable.
  • We would be particularly interested in professionals who have worked in environments where they have needed to balance ambitious organisational plans with limited resources, changing priorities and competing financial commitments.
  • Experience working with donor-funded organisations would be useful, but the priority is broader organisational financial management and strategic decision-making, rather than project finance or donor compliance alone.

The role is advisory rather than implementation-based. The mentor would not be expected to build systems or carry out finance work on behalf of the organisation, but would support the team to prioritise, review, challenge and strengthen the work they are taking forward internally.

The mentorship will be delivered remotely over six months, with approximately 2–4 hours of support per month.
